Vincentian filmmaker explores slavery

Vincentian filmmaker Akley Olton has released a documentary titled "SugarLands," which delves into the historical connections between Wales and St. Vincent and the Grenadines during the era of slavery.




The film features Vincentian historian Dr. Adrian Fraser, who guides viewers through the remnants of colonial plantations, shedding light on the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade in St. Vincent.


"SugarLands" has been showcased at various film festivals, including the Garifuna International Indigenous Film Festival, where it received attention for its insightful exploration of the historical ties between Wales and St. Vincent.


Olton, known for his commitment to highlighting Caribbean narratives, has previously directed films such as "Madulu," which premiered at the Hot Docs International Documentary Festival.


His work continues to shed light on the enduring impacts of colonialism and the importance of preserving and understanding the rich history of the Caribbean.
